The drawing for this story is a compass. The compass that Juan Pablo Manzuoli talked about when we were discussing “The map” chapter from “Linchpin”. Such a rich concept the one that Juan Pablo brought up. He mentioned the compass as the third element of a powerful combination of concepts: The map + the journey + the compass. He acknowledged the need to have a map but we should always remember that the journey changes along the way and we should be ok with that. And when the journey changes, that is where we need the compass. To make sure we stay focused and on track to our destination whatever that is. And this doesn't mean the destination doesn't change, everything can change and we should be always open to re-think things, or, think again! I think you will agree that the compass becomes a key element in the journey.

Through every chapter we discussed, Juan Pablo has been very inspiring, and this one was not the exception. He always goes one layer deeper. When talking about the compass, he mentioned that the compass may need calibration along the journey and it may be difficult to do that ourselves. That is where coaching can help. The journey is never seamless, there are obstacles that we have to overcome. Having someone that can help us calibrate the compass and put our journey back on track is essential.

As a personal example, through the pandemic I really felt the need to calibrate my compass and I benefited a lot through working with a coach. She helped me understand how my journey was changing, how to calibrate my compass and take ownership of the destination and necessary steps to get in the right direction. The journey is still going and will continue forever but it was very interesting to reflect on this topic that Juan Pablo shared as I lived through it myself.

Juan Pablo brought up a key element to consider in our journeys and when drawing or updating our maps: The compass.
